Having gained international standing for his guitar playing with Wishbone Ash, Leningrad Cowboys, Gringos Locos, Guitar Slingers and more recently Los Bastardos Finlandeses, Ben Granfelt is without doubt one of the best all-round rock music guitar players on the European scene today. He not only delivers superlative fretwork, but he is also a most excellent songwriter. With both Wishbone Ash and the Leningrad Cowboys he performed all around the planet, playing in over 20 countries including North America, Japan and Australia. In all Ben Granfelt has played guitar for 40 years of which 30 as a professional musician, performing on 32 albums, of which 12 bearing his own name.
Last year Ben Granfelt released Handmade a brand–new driving classic rock album with a touch of stirring Blues and some haunting guitar ballads. The single and video from Handmade, Going Home, had been a long-time crowd favourite from Granfelt’s live shows, and one that Granfelt had initially written for his 1999 E.G.O. album. It was also one of his songs performed live with Wishbone Ash during his first year with them. A melodic two guitar piece Going Home was never recorded in a twin-guitar version with Wishbone Ash so now that Ben’s band also features a second guitar player the time was right. Ben Granfelt – by the way – played with the legendary Wishbone Ash from 2001 – 2004, appearing on Bona Fide as well as the live album and DVD Almighty Blues: London and Beyond.
250370 - Ben Granfelt - 20th AnnivBen formed The Ben Granfelt Band in the early 90s and since then the outfit have ceaselessly been touring clubs and festivals in Finland, United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and they even forayed into the United Arab Emirates where they appeared at the Abu Dhabi and Dubai Jazz Festivals. 2014 was the year that this guitar virtuoso celebrated his 20th anniversary with his Ben Granfelt Band and to mark the occasion Ben Granfelt embarked on a celebratory tour which was captured for release of a 3-disc set (2 audio compact disc albums + DVD): 20th Anniversary Tour.
On the road Ben invited the same line-up as the one with whom he recorded his latest studio album Handmade; Marko Karhu on guitar and John Vihervâ on bass, except for the German leg of the tour drummer Kai Jokiaho – due to previous commitments – was replaced by Risto “Klingeling” Rikala. Piecing together a set list from such a lengthy and successful career wasn’t easy, but naturally quite a few songs were picked from Handmade, his most recent studio album, while Ben and the band came up with all new arrangements for the older songs to fit the current line-up and new concept of the band, also making these versions of the older songs more interesting to the fans.
The Ben Granfelt Band will be appearing on selected summer festivals and with two tours booked in Germany for the autumn, a number of gigs their homeland, Finland, and more to be announced in other European countries, Ben and his cohorts will be busier than ever spreading the gospel of great classic guitar rock.
