One of Spain’s fastest-rising bands Belako are sharing their new single ‘Profile Anxiety’. The post-punk anthem is lifted from the band’s first internationally released album ‘Plastic Drama’ via BMG. Originally slated for this month, the band today announce that the album will now be released on 28th August due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Fans can pre-order the album here.
“Profile Anxiety is a pop song of epicurean intensity” explain the band. “It’s about how we admire, idolise and worship celebrity profiles on social media platforms. They occupy our memory & appear in our dreams, to the point where we think we know these people on a personal level. Social media projects this warped viewpoint into their lives; a false appearance that leads to illusional relationships”.
The new single follows on from a slew of recent songs which were released in quick succession at the beginning of the global lockdown. Tracks such as ‘The Craft’ & ‘marinella2017’ picked up a host of early support from the likes of NME, The Line Of Best Fit, Clash, So Young Magazine, Gigwise & 6 Music.
Named best new band by Rolling Stone Magazine in Spain, Belako comprises two powerhouse women in vocalist/keyboard player Cristina Lizarraga and bassist Lore Nekane Billelabeitia, alongside Lore’s brother Josu Ximun Billelabeitia, who plays guitar and drummer Lander Zalakain. Hailing from the small town of Mungia near Bilbao, Belako have been playing non-stop in Spain these past few years, building a dedicated fanbase in their native county which has quickly been spilling out into other parts of Europe and beyond.
Having supported the likes of DMA’s on their 2019 UK Tour, QOTSA and Liam Gallagher at Finsbury Park, and played major international festivals such as Primavera, SXSW , Low, Rock En Seine, Benicassim and Reading & Leeds, Belako’s explosive live performances have excited crowds from small dive bars in their early days to huge international festivals more recently, and their anything-can-happen stage attitude showcases the power, electricity and punk ethos of this exciting young band.
‘Plastic Drama’ is the bands fourth record, but the first since signing a major international record deal, and certainly their most ambitious to date. Self-produced by the band, ‘Plastic Drama' searches for “the real meaning of things in a world that translates everything into assembly lines, manufacturing and the exploitation of living beings,” say the band. “It’s about the harsh reality our generation is facing and the only good use of new technology, which is the ability to spread the word and call for action. The title of the album has another message, as it also reminds us the first world issues we’ve come so keen to complain about. We can only hope for a more responsible human legacy”.
Belako were primed for their break-out shows in The US this Spring including slots at SXSW, followed by an extensive headline tour in Spain and their first visit to The Great Escape Festival & main stage slots at Reading & Leeds Festival. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all those shows have been understandably cancelled. Further information & updates on live activity will be announced in due course.
