Visions 9/12: "...zwischen spanischem Temperament und Siesta-Gefühlen. … Das Album jedoch besitzt durch seine Dringlichkeit das Potenzial, zum Soundtrack für Klimaschutz-Demos zu werden."

Sonic Seducer "Belako sind so genial in der Komposition eingängiger Songs, wie im Aufbrechen von deren Strukturen. … Ein starkes Album."

BELAKO - "Sirène"
The story of a dream in which what you can't explain becomes clearer till the point you start to doubt what you have always seen, and what has been hidden from your eyes. We use the mermaid metaphor to portrait a transgender person as in french "sirène" sounds just like "si réel", "so real".

Spain’s Belako are sharing ‘Siréne’, the final teaser lifted their upcoming new album ‘Plastic Drama’ which will be released this Friday via BMG. Intense and immensely captivating, the new cut hears vocalist Cristina Lizarraga singing in French, depicting a dream of true equality & standing tall in support for transgender communities. The track is accompanied by the following video.

‘Plastic Drama’ is the bands fourth record, but the first since signing a major international record deal, and certainly their most ambitious to date. Self-produced by the band, ‘Plastic Drama' searches for the real meaning of things in a world in where everything translates into assembly lines, manufacturing and exploitation of living beings. An album that tells the parable of the hunter who has been hunted, how human beings consume while consuming themselves in a society where immediacy beats eternity and time itself.

Named best new band by Rolling Stone Magazine in Spain, Belako comprises two powerhouse women in vocalist/keyboard player Cristina Lizarraga and bassist Lore Nekane Billelabeitia, alongside Lore’s brother Josu Ximun Billelabeitia, who plays guitar and drummer Lander Zalakain. Hailing from the small town of Mungia near Bilbao, Belako have been playing non-stop in Spain these past few years, building a dedicated fanbase in their native country which has quickly been spilling out into other parts of Europe and beyond.

Recent singles such as Profile Anxiety, The Craft and Truth were shared in quick succession during the global lockdown, and received support from Radio 1’s Jack Saunders, 6 Music, NME, Clash, The Line Of Best Fit, Dork, DIY, So Young, Gigwise to name a few.

Having supported the likes of DMA’s on their 2019 UK Tour, QOTSA and Liam Gallagher at Finsbury Park, and played major international festivals such as Primavera, SXSW , Low, Rock En Seine, Benicassim and Reading & Leeds, Belako’s explosive live performances have excited crowds from small dive bars in their early days to huge international festivals more recently, and their anything-can-happen stage attitude showcases the power, electricity and punk ethos of this exciting young band.

Belako were primed for their break-out shows in The US earlier this year including slots at SXSW, followed by an extensive headline tour in Spain and their first visit to The Great Escape Festival. Not to mention they were to be the first ever Spanish band to perform on the main stage at Reading & Leeds Festival. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all those shows were understandably cancelled.
However, Belako pride themselves in being one of the most exciting live acts to arise from Spain and not even a global pandemic would stop them from performing. The band recently just finished a three-concert tour of some of their home country’s drive-in cinemas, breathing life into these forgotten outdoor spaces & giving fans the opportunity to hear the new record live, in a safe, socially distanced setting. Further information & updates on live activity will be announced in due course from one of Spain’s most exciting bands.
