Director Mike Solo says:
On Saturday 5 December in 2015, a bunch of bands playing post-rock, prog, metal and alternative rock got together at Manning Bar in Sydney, Australia to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Bird’s Robe Records
It was awesome
Thanks to the work of clipped.tv and Log Cabin Productions, we’re now able to relive that one glorious day of prog, post-rock and popcorn, which has lived so fondly in our memories over all these years
And for all the friends and fans who’ve joined us since then, who never had the opportunity to see some of these wonderful bands play live, or with this era of their lineup, or these particular songs, this is our gift to you as well
It’s 5+ hours of a high quality bootleg of our very own festival, put together in our typical DIY fashion, with plenty of prog, post-rock and popcorn
Enjoy!
Bird's Robe is home to some of Australia's brightest post-rock and prog exports, including sleepmakeswaves, We Lost The Sea, Closure in Moscow, Toehider, Meniscus, The Red Paintings, The Crooked Fiddle Band, Troldhaugen, Solkyri & more.
Earlier this year, the label announced plans for a documentary celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Original plans to celebrate 10 years of the label in 2020 were scuppered by the pandemic and production on the documentary has also been delayed due to the continuing lockdown restrictions. Production is currently planned to resume towards the end of this year.
Over the past 10 years, Bird's Robe has promoted over 1,000 shows and released over 100 records, including 5 x ARIA-nominated albums, 7 x #1 Independent Chart Albums and racking up combined streams over 10 million across the catalogue.
MORE ABOUT BIRD’S ROBE: THIS IS FAMILY
Over 10 years ago, Bird's Robe Records was launched with a live show in a little club in Sydney called the Excelsior Hotel, along with our first 2 releases.
Since then, it's been a truly incredible ride. Hundreds of shows, thousands of fans & millions of streams (not dollars, haha), for artists who don't tread a musical path that would be considered conventional.
This is the story of how some of Australia's most unlikely underground musicians were drawn in together under a bird-themed moniker and go on to form a scene that would see its music shared across the globe.
If you love post-rock, prog or otherwise experimental rock, chances are that you're a fan of a Bird's Robe band. Whether it's the crushing, emotional crescendos of sleepmakeswaves, We Lost The Sea & Meniscus, the fiery, catchy prog rock of Toehider & Closure in Moscow, or the quirky inexplicable energy of The Crooked Fiddle Band & Troldhaugen, this wide array of genres and styles have one thing in common: they are family.
Since 2008, Bird's Robe has been at the heart of a burgeoning scene of innovative and experimental musicians based in Australia. This group of acts have spread their wings over the past decade to go from bedrooms and rehearsal spaces, to performing at some of the world's most iconic venues and festivals, achieving an impressive level of mainstream recognition despite the odds.
This documentary seeks to tell this story in ambitious fashion - because the story of Bird's Robe, is the story of the bands themselves.
With that in mind, we are developing plans to produce a multi-episode documentary, which will not only explore the origin and development of Bird's Robe as a label, management & touring organisation, but also the individual paths of key artists, such as sleepmakeswaves, We Lost The Sea, Meniscus, Tangled Thoughts of Leaving, Closure in Moscow, Toehider & many more.
This isn’t going to just be a series of montages & highlight reels (though there’ll be plenty of that). We’re going to cover a range of topics, including what it’s like living life on the road, trying to build a career in the music industry, juggling family, relationships, mental health, finances and everything else. We’ll be chatting to not only the musicians, but also the crew and the teams behind the scenes who make everything work. There are some wonderful stories to be told, but also some challenging and cautionary tales, which we want to share as well. It’s going to be inspirational, funny, sad, cathartic and nostalgic for sure - but also informative and transparent.
This is a truly epic project, but we wanted to do nothing less: any story about this group of exceptional musicians has to be as epic as the music itself.
We've already secured the involvement of most of the key artists (including former band members to help tell the juicy stories of the early days), as well as important crew, media & industry players who have helped shape the story.
We are applying for various grants but - as with most projects related to Bird's Robe over the years - we're not confident we'll be fortunate enough to be awarded funding. We also don’t want to hold up the production of the documentary just for the slim chance of landing some Government coinage.
So, we've decided to turn to you, the fans, to help us make this something special.
The amount we're seeking is approximately half the production budget. The other half will be funded by ourselves.
These funds will go towards the filming and editing team, as well as the cost of gear, travel & venues (where required). They will also go towards the artists lending their time to help make the documentary, by paying a licence fee for the music used in the documentary, as well as a small snacks & drinks budget to keep them going through the hours of interviews required.
Sounds reasonable right?
But who’s behind all this?
Obviously Mike is involved. Mike (that’s me, writing about myself in the third person) is the Bird’s Robe guy, who runs the whole thing, packages your merch orders, provides slightly delayed replies to your emails and generally tries to strategise ways for artists to fulfil their goals and for fans to get the music they want from the artists they love.
The production crew at this stage will include:
Ari Lee - DoP & Editor
James O'Connor - DoP & Editor
Nate Hill - additional video & editing
Alex Wilson - additional audio & editing
Matt Harvey - Graphic design
Andrew Saltmarsh - Graphic design
Simeon Bartholomew - Consulting producer
Laurence Rosier Staines - Consulting producer
Mike Solo - Producer & Director
Bird’s Robe - the stats:
5 x ARIA nominations
7 x #1 Independent Albums
5 x ARIA Top 50 Albums
Over 50,000 records sold
Over 200,000 fans on social media
Over 10 million streams online
1,000+ shows over 12 years
100+ releases over 10 years
One more thing…
By the way - we’re not done mapping this out yet by any means. So if you have burning questions you want answered by any particular artists or crew, or even just want to share a story about your favourite artist or show, feel free to send them through to us at Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! We’re also doing a call out for fan videos, which you can link us to on YouTube or elsewhere (just don’t send a virus please…). Any of your footage we use will be fully credited.
Risks and challenges
There are plenty of common risks and challenges with a project like this The timeline could take longer than expected due to the large number of artists involved and the large amount of content required to edit together Production could also be delayed if things begin to get busy with shows and new releases as the pandemic (hopefully) comes to an end Obviously, any illness or injury to the principal production team could delay things as well However we are confident that we have a head start on the materials required to begin production Many artists have already expressed a willingness to prioritise their involvement during the first half of 2021 given the lack of shows and other projects to engage with We also have the ability of switch between team members to interview, film and edit parts of the documentary, should people's availabilities change With over a decade of experience delivering projects in this realm, I'm excited and determined to tell this story and expand the spotlight for these incredible artists
