FUTURE STATIC - neue Single "The Hourglass"

Paired with an accompanying music video, Melbourne metal five-piece Future Static share "The Hourglass", the next single taken from their highly anticipated debut album Liminality out November 24th, 2023 via Wild Thing Records.

The unveil of this latest track comes directly following the conclusion of the band’s first-ever international tour, supporting instrumental prog virtuosos and fellow label-mates and Aussies, The Omnific, across Europe and the UK.

>From a bird’s eye view, ‘The Hourglass’ is a grand showcase of the layers of prog influence that are imbued in the core of Future Static’s DNA. Opening with thunderous drum fills before transitioning into a double whammy of chugging down-tuned guitars and visceral screams, the track proceeds to weave incredible riffs, an impactful chorus, and an airy, emotional ambiance into one powerful package. Originally titled ‘Ruin//Reclaim’, ‘The Hourglass’ gradually shifts from being marked by “destructive” energy before embracing a lighter sound after the bridge, with the remainder of the track’s lyrical flow attaching itself to the harmonious instrumental.

“Thematically, this song describes what it feels like when you say something situationally agitating or hurtful and, instead of just letting it pass, you try to fix it with more unnecessary and misinterpreted words, causing a deep questioning of one’s own intentions and, in some cases, negatively life-changing,” explains the band. “Writing ‘The Hourglass’ was a true group effort. The verses, written mostly by Amariah, talk about metaphorically digging oneself into a hole in a generalized manner, compiling various situations caused by this cyclical behavior, whereas Kira wrote the chorus describing a particular situation where this ‘verbal vomiting’ was induced.”

The single’s music video, directed by the returning Colin Jeffs, leans into the “digging yourself into a hole” metaphor with its storyline and visuals, depicting the turn of phrase in the context of digging one's own grave. Spliced between footage of the story’s characters (depicted by Future Static’s Amariah Cook (lead vocals) and Kira Neil (bass/backing vocals)), are shots of the titular hourglass, looming ominously as the sand within persistently pours downward.

Defined as “the space between” or “a state of emptiness”, Future Static’s decision to name its debut album Liminality is aptly poetic. The addition of new frontperson and vocalist Amariah Cook in 2021 marked a clear transition point between its early days and the Future Static we know now. That said, the band is no stranger to the effects of limbo, be that a recording and writing process in pandemic-induced isolation or a two-year-long gauntlet of domestic and international touring as support for Jinjer (UKR) and Voyager (AU) prior to releasing a full album. It is in these circumstances marked by absence and stasis where Future Static flourishes. From physical separation, the band committed to making Liminality as collaborative a work as possible, with all members’ unique musical voices present in a cohesive, yet diverse artistic statement. Using the incessant layers of soaring lead guitars, heavy and effervescent riffs, trailed over by unique and stacked vocal melodies that Future Static is renowned for, the album ebbs and flows through a diverse slew of genre inspirations and themes.
